PM Modi Accuses DMK of Neglecting Tamil Nadu’s Interests in Katchatheevu Island Issue

top-news

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently criticized the MK Stalin-led DMK, accusing the party of failing to protect Tamil Nadu’s interests regarding the Katchatheevu island matter. In a tweet, PM Modi highlighted that despite their rhetoric, the DMK has not taken any substantial actions to safeguard Tamil Nadu’s interests. He also criticized the Congress-DMK alliance, stating that their focus is primarily on their own familial growth rather than the welfare of the people.

PM Modi’s remarks came after a report by Times of India revealed details about the India-Sri Lanka Maritime Agreement signed during the tenure of then-chief minister M Karunanidhi, despite the DMK’s outward opposition to the deal. The report included a statement by late DMK MP Era Sezhiyan, who strongly condemned the agreement as a surrender of territory without proper consideration.

Sezhiyan’s statement from 1974, quoted in the report, emphasized the detrimental impact of the agreement on India’s interests, labeling it as an “unholy and disgraceful act of statesmanship.” The report highlighted Sezhiyan’s unawareness of Karunanidhi’s approval of the pact, revealing internal contradictions within the DMK regarding the Katchatheevu issue.

The Katchatheevu island, spanning 163 acres, is situated in the Palk Strait between Rameswaram in India and Sri Lanka. Initially part of the Madras Presidency, it became part of Sri Lanka in 1974 following the Indo-Sri Lankan Maritime Agreement signed by then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The agreement pertained to historic waters in the Palk Strait and the Palk Bay between the two nations.

PM Modi’s criticism and the revelations from the TOI report shed light on the complex historical and political dynamics surrounding the Katchatheevu island issue, underscoring the need for clarity and transparency in matters concerning territorial agreements and national interests.
